What to do in the garage
Parking garages are the one setting where footage genuinely tends to exist — downtown structures, mall garages like Yorkdale’s, and most condo visitor levels are camera-covered, and the entry gates timestamp everything. Note your stall, your level, and the exact time you returned, then ask the office before you leave the building.
Photograph the ding with the neighbouring stall in frame. That records which side the other door swung from — the first thing anyone reviewing footage will ask — and it is impossible to reconstruct once you have driven home to Willowdale. Tight condo stalls and the narrow spots on older garage levels produce most of these, so the same building tends to produce them again.
- Stall number, level, and your entry time from the ticket or app
- A photo of the ding with the adjacent stall visible
- A close-up showing whether the paint is broken
- Any colour transfer, which identifies the other car’s shade
- The garage office contact, asked about footage the same day
Whether a claim makes sense
If the other driver is identified and insured in Ontario, you are the not-at-fault party and DCPD sends the claim through your own insurance company, normally without a deductible. Without an identification, the ding falls to your collision coverage with your deductible attached.
For one ding, arithmetic settles it. A single panel with unbroken paint is a modest repair, and holding that number against a deductible often points to paying directly — which also keeps a claim off your file. Your broker can confirm which coverage would respond before you commit either way.

What the repair takes
Everything turns on the paint. When the finish is unbroken and the metal is not creased, the panel can often be worked back to shape without spraying anything, which preserves your factory finish — the best possible outcome for that door and the one we aim for whenever the damage allows it.
When the paint is cracked, chipped, or scraped to primer, the door needs straightening, sealing, and refinishing with a measured colour match blended into the panels beside it. That happens with the mirror, handle, and trim removed, so the finished door reads as original rather than repainted.
