Why York drivers make the trip

Worth the drive, once — then it’s your shop

York’s streets are hard on cars in ways newer suburbs never learn: permit parking on both sides of narrow interwar streets, mutual driveways barely a car wide, steep Silverthorn hills that ice over, and Black Creek Dr moving at highway pace two blocks from front porches. When something connects, the owner writes your estimate himself, opens the claim with your insurance company, and sees the car through himself. If it won’t drive, we coordinate the tow up Keele from wherever it stopped.

Your insurance company can’t choose your shop — in Ontario that choice is always yours. Here’s how that works.

One road, two cities of York

First, the name. This page is for York proper — the former City of York that folded into Toronto in 1998, the wedge of streets around Eglinton West, Rogers Rd, and Weston Rd that includes Keelesdale, Silverthorn, Mount Dennis, Fairbank, Oakwood Village, and Rockcliffe–Smythe. Our shop sits in North York, off Keele just south of Sheppard — a different place with a confusingly similar name, about 9 km north of the neighbourhood.

The connection between the two is as simple as it gets in this city: Keele St. From Keele & Eglinton in Keelesdale, you point the car north and arrive without a single turn, usually in 13 to 20 minutes. From the Oakwood and Fairbank side, Allen Rd north from Eglinton is often quicker than surface streets. And because the Keele bus runs the full length of the street, dropping a car with us and getting home without it is a single-seat ride — no transfers, no favours to call in.

What York streets do to York cars

The damage we see from York follows the neighbourhood’s bones. The housing stock went up in the 1910s and 20s, when a garage was optional and a driveway was something you shared with the house next door — so cars live on the street, nose to tail, on roads narrow enough that two moving vehicles and one parked one make an equation with no good answer. Mirrors get clipped, parked doors get raked, and every winter the windrows squeeze the margin down further.

Then there is the fast side of the ledger. Black Creek Dr carries highway habits to a road with traffic lights, and the braking chain at Trethewey or Lawrence produces rear-end hits all year. Eglinton spent the better part of a decade as a Crosstown construction zone, and the lane discipline it taught — sudden merges, squeezed lanes, delivery vans stopping where no stopping exists — still writes estimates for the strip between the Allen and Weston Rd. Add spring potholes on Weston Rd and Rogers Rd, and York supplies a steady mix of slow scrapes and hard hits.

How the repair works from 9 km away

Distance never has to be the first problem you solve. Text photos of the damage to (647) 594-3401 and a written number comes back fast — before you have decided anything, before the car has moved a metre. If the car is drivable, bring it up Keele whenever suits you between 8 AM and 7 PM, Monday to Saturday, or Sunday by appointment. If it is not, tell us where it sits — Black Creek Dr shoulder, a Rockcliffe side street, your half of a mutual driveway — and we arrange the tow; under Ontario’s rules the destination is your call, not the tow operator’s.

From there, one person owns your file. The owner opens the claim with your insurance company, meets the adjuster, and files supplements when teardown finds what photos missed. A rental, where your coverage includes one, gets timed to your drop-off. You get updates from the person doing the work until the keys come back.

  • Photo estimate first — a written number before the car moves
  • Straight up Keele St, or the Keele bus home after drop-off
  • Tow coordinated from wherever the car stopped — your choice of destination
  • Claim, adjuster, and supplements handled from our side

York questions

Questions from York drivers

Straight answers before you commit to anything — and a human on the phone when you want one.

Is Collision Auto Center in York or North York?

North York — the shop is off Keele just south of Sheppard. York the neighbourhood (the old City of York, around Eglinton West and Keelesdale) is about 9 km south of us, a straight run of roughly 13–20 minutes up Keele St or the Allen.

My parked car was hit overnight on the street and the driver left. What do I do?

Photograph everything where it sits, then report the hit-and-run to police or a Collision Reporting Centre and notify your insurance company promptly. With no identified driver, the repair typically runs through your own policy’s collision coverage. Send us the photos too — we will price the damage so you can weigh the claim against your deductible.

Can I get an estimate without driving up from York?

Yes. Text three photos — a wide shot, the damaged corner, and a close-up — to (647) 594-3401 and a written estimate comes back fast. Most York customers start that way and only make the trip up Keele once, when the repair is booked and parts are waiting.
