Wellington Street decides how Aurora cars get hit

Nearly everything in Aurora funnels through one east–west road. Wellington carries the heritage core at Yonge, the office traffic around the Magna campus, the SmartCentres big-box corridor by the highway, and finally the 404 interchange itself — and the backups at that ramp produce a steady diet of rear-end taps every weekday. South of town the picture changes: the 404 from Bloomington down to the 401 is a genuine commuter highway, and a sudden slowdown at 100 km/h does far more than fold a bumper cover. West of Yonge, drivers heading for Bathurst deal with the older, narrower streets around Town Park, where on-street parking and snow squeeze two lanes into one and a half.

North and east of town is a different hazard altogether. St John’s Sideroad, Vandorf, and Leslie north of Wellington run dark and treed, and the deer that live along the Oak Ridges Moraine cross them at dusk without checking traffic. A deer strike at rural speed is rarely just a dented hood — headlight mounts, the radiator support, and the sensors behind the grille all sit in the impact zone. Driveways, GO lots, and the rest of Aurora parking

Aurora’s housing stock splits its parking problems in two. The century homes near the four corners have driveways poured for cars half the size of a modern SUV, often shared with a neighbour, which is how mirrors get clipped and quarter panels get creased at walking speed. The newer subdivisions east of Bayview flipped the problem: the garage surrendered to bikes and storage bins years ago, so the vehicles sleep on the driveway through summer sun and winter windrows, and every plough pass leaves a frozen ridge to force through in the morning.
