Why the rocker is always first to go
The rocker is the lowest painted steel on the car, sitting centimetres from the front tire’s spray for the whole salt season. Everything the tire lifts off a brined 401 or a slushy Sheppard — salt water, sand, grit — either blasts the rocker’s leading edge or settles onto its pinch weld and stays. Add the plastic sill covers many models wear, quietly holding wet grit against the paint, and the rocker lives in worse weather than any other panel on the vehicle.
Rockers also rot from the inside out. They are hollow box sections with drain holes along the bottom edge, and when those drains pack with sand, meltwater ponds inside the cavity. That is why a rocker can look clean in November and wear a line of bubbles by March: the corrosion started on the surface you could never see.
Ride height finishes the job. A low sedan carries its rockers square in the densest band of wheel spray, while a truck or SUV spreads the same grit over a taller panel — and a winter of parking nose-in against a windrow soaks either one. The rocker absorbs whatever Toronto streets throw for months on end, while the hood and roof only ever meet weather falling from above.
Reading the damage from outside
One blister near a wheel opening tells a different story from a soft row of bubbles running the length of the panel. The first is often a stone strike left open to the brine; the second usually means moisture inside the box section has been working for a while. A crusty, flaking bottom lip is the most serious sign of all, because it points at the pinch weld — the seam that doubles as the factory jack point.
The honest caveat: the outside never tells the whole rocker story, because the panel is an outer skin over an inner structure. That is exactly why we look behind the panel before committing to a final figure — the covers come off first, so the written number reflects the metal that is actually there rather than a guess made from the curb.
One check you can run yourself: open the doors and look at the painted sill under the weatherstrip. Corrosion that has climbed to the inner sill means the cavity has been wet for a long time, and it usually moves the conversation toward replacement before the car has even seen a hoist.
Repair or replace: how the call gets made
A short corroded run with sound metal on both sides gets cut out and rebuilt with a welded patch, then dressed and refinished — the smallest honest version of the job. A long stretch of bubbling usually argues for a partial or full rocker skin instead, because chasing corrosion patch by patch down a panel burns more hours than replacing the skin once.
The deciding vote belongs to the inner rocker. If the inner structure is clean, outer-skin work of either kind lasts. If the inner rocker is going too, the arithmetic turns quickly, and we would rather show you that with the cover removed than discover it after you have approved a smaller repair.
Replacement is not automatically the expensive answer, either. On some models a formed rocker section costs less than the labour a long multi-patch repair would need; on others the panel supply is thin and careful patching is the only sensible route. This is why we quote the specific car in front of us instead of reading from a chart.
What moves the price up or down
We never quote rocker work sight unseen, but the levers are consistent and worth knowing before you gather estimates around North York. None of them are mysterious — they all come down to how much metal is involved and how much of the car has to come apart to reach it.

- Whether the inner rocker structure is involved
- Replacement panel supply for your specific model
- Sill covers, trim, and door edges that must come off for access
- How far the refinish has to blend into the door and quarter panel
- One side of the car or both — they rarely age at the same rate

Rockers contribute to the body’s stiffness, and they carry the jack points. When rust has gone through the inner rocker or into the floor edge, the fix is structural fabrication — a restorer’s trade, not a collision shop’s. On a car you love, that money is well spent with the right specialist, and we will point you to one. On a tired commuter, it is usually money better kept in your pocket.
That answer costs us work, and we give it anyway. A repair we cannot warranty is a repair we do not want our name attached to, and quietly skimming a structural rocker with filler to win a booking is exactly the shortcut this shop exists to be the alternative to.
There is no shame in that outcome, either. Ontario road salt retires bodywork earlier than the drivetrain under it, and a rocker that finally gives out after years of winters on the 400-series did its job. The only useful question is whether this particular car has earned its next chapter.

No insurance company reimburses gradual corrosion, so treat rocker work like planned maintenance: photograph both rockers in daylight, send the pictures over, and a free written estimate comes back fast. Fall is the smart deadline — a blistering rocker that crosses one more salt season returns as a bigger job with a bigger number.
