A town this charming should come with door-edge guards
Downtown Dundas parks the old-fashioned way — angled and parallel spots along King Street West, narrow lanes behind the storefronts — and the dents follow the parking. Nose-in spots trade door edges with the car alongside; the lanes crease quarter panels on dumpster corners and bollards. On festival weekends the pressure doubles: Buskerfest in June and the Cactus Festival in August fill every legal spot and a few imaginary ones, and Monday brings us photographs of mystery creases with no note under the wiper.
The other reliable sources are the lots and the driveways. University Plaza on Osler Drive is the valley’s busiest parking field, and its rows are exactly tight enough for a flung door to plant a ding in the middle of your door skin. The century streets off Ogilvie and Park Street West have driveways poured when cars were narrower, so garbage-day manoeuvres and visitor turnarounds leave shallow dents in quarters and tailgates. In fall, add the Dundas Peak overflow — visitors turning in unfamiliar driveways from Greensville down into town do their share of quiet damage.
What a proper dent repair involves
A dent is metal that moved, and the repair is moving it back — not burying it. Where there is access behind the panel, the metal is worked from the inside until the surface reads flat under a straightedge and raking light. Where the crease stretched the steel or cracked the paint, the panel is finished with the thinnest skim the surface allows, primed, and refinished. What we do not do is the shortcut: a thick fill sanded smooth looks fine for a season, then shrinks into a shadow you can see every time the sun is low over the escarpment.
Refinishing is half the job on any dent that broke paint. The colour is mixed to your code, tinted against your car’s actual panels, and blended into the surrounding metal so the repair has no edge. Small dents force a decision dents in bigger collisions never do: claim or cash. If the repair quote sits near your deductible, paying out of pocket is usually the sensible route, and we will say so. If another driver dented your parked car and identified themselves, DCPD puts the repair with your own insurance company at no fault to you. If they drove off, the claim typically lands on your collision coverage — a prompt report, ideally with photos of the spot on King Street West where it happened, keeps that clean.
