What to do the day it happens
For the glass, keep the temperature swing small. A star or bullseye chip grows the moment a frozen windshield meets a defroster on full blast, so warm the car gradually until the chip is dealt with. A square of clear tape over the break keeps dirt and moisture out in the meantime.
For the paint, look at each chip in good light. Grey primer showing means the finish is still protecting the metal underneath. Bright metal, or a small dark spot forming, means salt and moisture already have their opening — and a GTA winter will take it from there without any further help.

Ontario glass coverage, plainly
In Ontario, windshield and glass damage falls under the comprehensive portion of your policy, and your normal comprehensive deductible applies — there is no special zero-deductible glass rule here, whatever you may have read about other places. Some drivers carry a lower comprehensive deductible or a glass endorsement, so check your policy documents before paying out of pocket.
Shop choice works the same way it does for bodywork: in Ontario you choose who repairs your car, glass included, and an insurance company can recommend a vendor but cannot require one. We do not replace glass at our shop — if that is what you need, we point you to a specialist rather than take the job.
What we handle — the paint side
Chipped paint is damage, not a blemish. Once the finish is broken, corrosion starts under the surrounding paint and works outward, which is how a scatter of untreated hood chips becomes a full refinish after a few winters instead of a touch-up.
Depending on how far it has gone, the answer is either sealing and refinishing the affected area, or refinishing the panel and blending into its neighbours. Highway debris rarely travels alone — a scuffed bumper cover and a cracked lamp tab usually come with it, and those get handled in the same visit.

Getting it assessed
Photograph the hood straight on, then again at a low angle with the light raking across the paint — the raking shot is the one that reveals how many chips there actually are. Send both for a free written estimate.
