How do body shops fix a dent in a door?
Quick answer
It hinges on two things: whether the paint broke, and whether the metal stretched. Unbroken paint plus access behind the panel means the dent gets massaged out from the back with the factory finish untouched. Cracked paint, a sharp crease, or stretched metal means the panel is pulled straight, skimmed with thin filler, primed, and refinished with colour blended into the neighbouring panels.

Reading the dent comes first
Before a tool comes out, three questions get answered: is the paint film broken, is the metal creased or merely pushed in, and can a technician reach the back side of the panel. Those three answers write the whole estimate.
A soft, rounded dent with intact paint means the metal moved without stretching much — it can usually be worked back from behind and the original finish survives. A hard crease is different: the metal has been stretched along a line, and stretched steel does not simply spring home. It has to be worked, and sometimes shrunk.
Doors are also obstacle courses inside. Window regulators, intrusion beams, speakers, harnesses, and side-airbag hardware sit directly behind the outer skin, so getting access usually means removing the trim panel and vapour barrier first, and sometimes dropping the glass out of the way.
The whole assessment takes minutes and settles everything that follows:

When it comes out from behind
Paintless dent repair works the metal from the inside using rods and a specialized light board. The technician watches a reflected line on the panel and lifts the low spot in tiny increments until the reflection runs straight. Nothing gets filled, nothing gets sprayed, and the factory paint stays factory — the best possible outcome for the car’s value, which is why so many condo-garage door dings end this way.
When there is no path to the back of the dent — a sealed cavity, a bonded reinforcement, a double-walled section — glue pulling is the fallback. Tabs are glued to the outside, pulled with a lifter or slide hammer, and released with alcohol. Slower and less precise, but it avoids drilling holes into sealed structure, which would hand the panel a rust problem for its first Toronto winter.
When the panel needs metal work and paint
Cracked paint, a crease, damage at the door edge, or a skin driven into its inner frame all point to conventional repair. The finish comes off the damaged area down to bare steel so the technician can see exactly what the metal is doing.
Low spots get pulled — a stud welder placing pins to pull against, or a dolly braced behind while the highs are tapped down. The target is a panel within a hair of its factory contour using metal work alone. Where the steel stretched, controlled heat and a shrinking hammer gather the excess back in.
Only then does filler appear, and only as a thin skim across metal that is already straight. It is blocked flat, sealed under primer, and sanded again. Filler slathered on to hide lazy metal work is why filler has a bad reputation; used as a levelling material, it is how every proper cosmetic repair gets finished.
An aluminum skin rewrites the playbook. Aluminum work-hardens fast, ignores steel shrinking techniques, and demands separate tools and a separate work area so steel dust cannot embed and start galvanic corrosion. Damage that is a routine fix in steel is frequently a skin replacement in aluminum — and a straight shop tells you which door you own.
Why the door is rarely the only panel sprayed
Refinish a door in isolation and it will almost always show, even with a technically perfect match. The fender and quarter beside it have spent years fading in the sun, and fresh paint stopping dead at a panel gap hands your eye a hard edge to find.
Blending is the cure: colour fades out into the adjacent panels, and clear coat carries across the whole area to a natural break line. That is why a door-dent estimate often includes fender time — not padding, but the thing that makes the repair disappear.
Metallics, pearls, and tri-coats make blending non-negotiable, because the flake in the finish settles at slightly different angles depending on how it was sprayed. Two panels mixed from one formula can still read differently across a hard edge.
The jamb matters too. A door that is the right colour outside and the old colour inside its jamb announces the repair the first time anyone opens it, so jambs get sprayed as part of the job.
What a finished door repair should look like
Close your eyes and run a hand across the repair — you should feel nothing. Then sight down the side of the car at a shallow angle using a straight reflection, a fluorescent tube or a roofline, and the line should travel through the repaired area without a ripple.
