Work the scene before you leave it
You have a short window while the lot still looks the way it did. Photograph your car in its spot, then study where the damage sits — the height and angle usually reveal whether it came from a swung door, a bumper, or a truck mirror, and that tells you exactly what to ask the cameras to look for.
Then walk the perimeter. Plaza lots along Sheppard, mall garages at Yorkdale, and condo visitor parking across North York are watched by cameras on storefronts, light standards, and garage entrances — and most systems overwrite within days. A manager asked the same afternoon is a very different conversation from one asked next week.
- Photograph the car in the space, including the neighbouring stalls
- Note when you parked and when you returned
- Identify every camera with a sightline to your spot
- Ask the property manager to preserve footage while it still exists
- File a report so the incident carries a dated record
What Ontario law required the other driver to do
Ontario is explicit about this: a driver who collides with an unattended vehicle must stop and either locate the owner or leave a written notice with their name and address in a visible place on the car they struck. Driving off without doing either is an offence, not a grey area.
That matters for the money. If footage or a witness identifies the vehicle and it carries Ontario insurance, you claim the not-at-fault damage through your own insurance company under DCPD, normally without a deductible. If nobody ever surfaces, the loss typically runs through your collision coverage instead, with your deductible attached.
What parking lot damage takes to repair
