Underground parking saves most Yorkville cars — until it doesn’t

Yorkville is better protected from hail than almost any neighbourhood in Toronto, because so much of its parking is three storeys down. But the exceptions are exactly when it matters: the car left on a surface Green P for a dinner reservation, the valet row outside a hotel when a July thunderstorm builds over the city in twenty minutes, the weekend the car spent in cottage country north of Aurora where the cells run bigger. Hail is intensely local — one side of Avenue Rd can take a beating while the other stays dry — and it takes minutes, not hours, to write a four-figure estimate across a hood.

The damage pattern is distinctive: dozens of shallow, round dents concentrated on the horizontal surfaces — hood, roof, deck lid — plus the upper curves of the fenders, sometimes with chipped paint at the centre of the deeper strikes and, in a strong cell, cracked glass or broken mirror housings. Counting matters. An assessment that logs every dent, panel by panel, is the difference between a claim that pays for the actual damage and one that pays for the damage a quick walk-around happened to notice under a cloudy sky.

How hail repair is actually decided, panel by panel

There is no single hail repair — there is a decision per panel. Shallow dents in accessible metal can be worked back without disturbing the factory finish. Deeper strikes that stretched the metal or cracked the paint need conventional repair and refinishing. A roof skin carrying a hundred dents may be more honestly replaced than repaired. We map the car under proper lighting, assign each panel its method, and price the whole picture — which is also the format your insurance company’s appraiser expects to see, so the claim negotiation starts from a document rather than a disagreement.

Where refinishing is needed, the colour is matched with sprayed test cards and blended so a repaired hood does not read differently from the fenders beside it — a detail that matters on the light metallics and pearls common in these blocks, which show hail poorly but show mismatched paint worse. Refinished panels carry our lifetime paint warranty. If glass was cracked, it is handled in the same claim: in Ontario, glass falls under comprehensive with your normal deductible — there is no special zero-deductible glass rule here.

After the storm: timing, claims, and one honest warning

Hail is a comprehensive claim, not collision — it does not raise the at-fault question and it is treated as an act of weather. Report it promptly, then get the car photographed in good light before dust and pollen start hiding the shallower dents. After a widespread storm, insurance companies triage thousands of claims at once and shops fill up in days; sending us photos immediately puts your written estimate and your booking slot ahead of the wave. We deal with the appraiser from our office, and supplements get filed with photographs if the appraisal missed strikes our lighting found.

The warning: after every major GTA hail event, pop-up operations appear with parking-lot repairs and same-day promises. Some are competent; many are gone before the first winter reveals the cracked paint and rust freckles their shortcuts left behind. A hail repair is only cheap once. Our work is done in the shop, documented in your file, and backed by a warranty held by a business that will still be off Keele just south of Sheppard next year — Monday through Saturday, 8 AM to 7 PM, at (647) 594-3401.

  • Photograph the car promptly, before shallow dents hide in dust
  • Comprehensive claim — no fault assigned, your normal deductible applies
  • Panel-by-panel damage map priced and shared with the appraiser
  • Glass handled in the same claim under comprehensive coverage

Common questions

Straight answers before you commit to anything — and a human on the phone when you want one.

My car was on a surface lot near Bloor during a storm. Is hail worth claiming?

Usually yes, once the count is honest. Hail estimates climb quickly — dozens of dents across a hood and roof routinely reach several thousand dollars, well past a typical comprehensive deductible. Comprehensive claims also carry no fault, so the at-fault premium worry does not apply the way people fear. Send photos and we will give you a written number to weigh against your deductible.

Only my hood and roof were hit. Do you have to repaint the whole car?

No. Each panel gets its own decision — worked back where the metal allows, repaired and refinished where a strike stretched metal or cracked paint. Any refinished panel is blended into its neighbours so the finish stays continuous, and only the panels that need paint get paint. The map of those decisions is exactly what we price and share with your insurance company.

Hail cracked my windshield too. Is that a separate claim?

No — the glass rides in the same comprehensive claim as the dents. In Ontario, windshield damage falls under comprehensive coverage with your normal deductible; there is no special glass provision that waives it. We document the glass alongside the panel damage so the whole event is settled once, and the replacement is coordinated within the same repair visit.

Honestly, I thought my car would never look the same again — but they completely proved me wrong. I couldn’t even tell where the damage had been repaired or repainted. The paint matched perfectly, and the bodywork was flawless.
