When a storm cell crosses Waterloo Region

Summer thunderstorms track across southwestern Ontario with real energy, and Kitchener sits in their path — a cell that builds over the farmland west of the city can drop hail on Forest Heights and be gone in ten minutes, leaving a postal code of dimpled hoods behind it. The newer subdivisions take it worst: streets off Huron Road and out toward Trussler have double driveways, single garages full of everything except cars, and no mature canopy to blunt the fall. A vehicle parked outside The Boardwalk or in an open row on Fairway Road during the wrong half hour collects the same pattern — dozens of shallow dents across hood, roof, and deck lid, with paint cracked wherever a stone hit an edge.

Hail damage misleads people twice. It looks minor in the driveway because each dent is small, then it prices high on the estimate because there are sixty of them across every horizontal surface. It also punishes waiting: broken paint in a road-salt region rusts, and an unrepaired hail claim complicates any later collision claim on the same panels because someone has to separate old damage from new.

Counted under the light, repaired panel by panel

A proper hail assessment happens indoors under angled light, where every dent throws a shadow — daylight in a driveway hides half of them, which is why drive-through storm estimates run low and then grow. We map the damage panel by panel and let the metal make the decisions: shallow dents in accessible skins are worked back to shape; panels peppered past saving, most often roof skins where dents overlap, are replaced rather than filled into a lumpy compromise.

Where paint was broken, the refinish follows — colour mixed to your code, adjusted to the car’s weathered finish, and blended so a repaired hood reads as one surface in the sun. Cracked or chipped glass goes on the same claim; in Ontario, windshields fall under comprehensive with your normal deductible, the same coverage paying for the hail itself. Everything refinished carries the lifetime paint warranty, so a storm that lasted ten minutes does not follow the car for years.

A comprehensive claim that skips the post-storm queue

Hail is a comprehensive claim, not a collision claim — no fault to assign, your deductible applies, and you notify your insurance company promptly, ideally inside the roughly seven days the standard policy expects. Here the distance quietly works in your favour: when one storm hits a whole region, every shop within it books out for weeks, all at once. A shop 105 km east of the storm footprint has bays free the same week, and for a repair measured in days of booth time, that difference often outweighs the drive.

The sequence stays remote until the work starts. Photos of each damaged surface go to (647) 594-3401 — shoot low and across the panel so the dents shadow up — and a written estimate follows. The owner opens the comprehensive claim, meets the adjuster here, and supplements it if the light-line inspection finds what driveway photos missed, which it usually does. A rental through your coverage is timed to your drop-off; hours are Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 7 PM, Sundays by appointment.

Good to know

Common questions

Straight answers before you commit to anything — and a human on the phone when you want one.

Does my insurance cover hail damage, and what will it cost me?

If your policy includes comprehensive coverage, hail is covered, and your cost is the comprehensive deductible. There is no fault assigned for weather. If you are not sure what your deductible is, it is on your certificate of insurance — send it with your photos and the estimate will show exactly where you land.

The hail dents are small. Can I just leave them?

You can, but two clocks run against you. Anywhere the paint cracked will rust once winter brine finds it, and an unrepaired hail pattern muddies any future claim on those panels because old and new damage must be separated. At minimum, report the damage promptly and get the estimate on file — the repair itself can then be scheduled on your calendar.

Can a hail storm actually write off my car?

It happens, especially on older vehicles — dozens of dents plus a roof-skin replacement and full refinish can pass the vehicle’s actual cash value, and Ontario leaves that judgment to the insurance company’s math on value versus repair cost and salvage. We document every panel honestly, so whichever way the file resolves, it resolves on real numbers.
